Former President Rhodes Spotlight

Former Madame President Rhodes of the 2022-2023 Season reflects on her experiences running UMass Mock! In her own words:

"Being President of UMass Mock Trial was quite a ride. Stepping into the role of President was both thrilling and challenging. While there were undoubtedly obstacles along the way, I can genuinely say that I relished every minute of it.

One of the most significant takeaways from my time as President was the importance of preparedness. I quickly learned the value of having a backup plans for my backup plans whenever unexpected situations arose - whether it was a team member falling ill before a competition or conflicts arising among teammates, adaptability was key.

A core lesson that really stands out for me is the power or belief in others. I witnessed firsthand the remarkable potential within each team member, and their growth throughout the season with the support of their team. My teammates constantly surprising me with their abilities - whether it was their first year or their eighth. I carry that lesson with me always - believe in everyone. Every single person is capable of greatness.

Last year, the camaraderie and sense of empowerment that blossomed within our team were awe-inspiring. Each person on the team had something to contribute, and I was always amazed at just how brilliant my teammates are. If you ever had the pleasure of hearing Davide's theory that began with "A compass is a circle," you would know what I mean.

Transitioning into postgraduate life, the skills that I honed during my time in mock trial have proven invaluable. Mock trial made me a better, more confident advocate in both my professional and personal life. Interestingly, my mock trial journey has taken on a concrete form in my current role as a paralegal at the law office of Attorney Rosemary Scapicchio. The analytical thinking, strategic planning, and communication finesse developed my mock trial translate directly into my daily responsibilities at work. I spent four years at UMass Mock on the defense, and now I get to be on the defense everyday.

UMass Mock is such a cherished aspect of my undergraduate career. I've said it before and I'll say it again, mock trial gave me my best friends. The program is full of amazing individuals who I know that I will be frineds with for a long time. Every single person in the program has had an impact on me in some way, and I am eternally grateful that I crossed paths with every single individual I did.

I am immensely grateful for the journey that mock trial has taken on me. From my very first cross-examination at tryouts where I tried to strike every single one of the witnesses answers, to competing at ORCS with and against some of the best competitors in the country - I loved every minute. I am so proud to have been part of such an incredible organization"
